The East Hampshire market town of Petersfield, located 15 miles north of Portsmouth, is blessed with beautiful countryside on the northern slopes of the South Downs. The town was founded in the 12th century by William Fitz Robert, the 2nd Earl of Gloucester and developed into a major coach stop for travelers between London and Portsmouth. In the early years of the 18th century the town held its own races, with the meeting in 1729 deemed to be sufficiently important to be included in John Cheny’s Racing Calendar. It was an unusual race because it was a selling race, one of the earliest selling races, and was only decided when a horse won 3 heats rather than the customary 2 heats.
